Goodbye Constantine
Notes.-
This is a song about Post Christendom ie the age that we are now living in here in the UK. 300 years after the resurrection of Jesus, the Roman Emporer Constantine, dragged the underground faith/sect/cult of Christianity out of the shadows and “married it to the state” – some would argue that this was a good thing and others would say it was a bad thing… whatever side you are on, the fact remains that it changed the course of Christianity throughout the world. So the age of Christendom began and many believe due to the now secular state that we are living in, this age has passed and we are thus in post-christendom.
At the same time, the scientists are pointing to a new age, where the polarity of our earth is changing – again this is about due (2012) and happens gradually and we won’t really notice anything, but the scientists will “see” the earth wobble on its axis. Scientists also point to weather changes and of course we are headed for global warming, if we are not already experiencing it!
The “wise men” were of course the Magi – scientists of their time and interested in astrology….
The New Age fraternity are fond of astrology and all things “mystic” and so are looking forward to the new age which is about to happen and they call it Aquarius – apparently we are “in” and about to move “out” of pisces and the past 2000 years have been pisces… fish, early Christianity, Jesus, fishermen…?
“Fearworks” is a phrase bandied about by western governments to control its citizens…. Roman empire had a similar view/practice….
Due to the secularisation of society – church must change or church will die…
Words of song
We’re closing in, on the end of time,
Scuse me baby, while I find a rhyme,
One mans church, is another mans hate,
Excuse me honey I can’t be late,
One mans hate, is another mans love
What does he think, Our God above?
We’re moving in on the end of time,
Keep your eyes on Jesus and you’ll be fine
There a new age, yes, a new age,
Magi-saw-the-star-sign
A new age, yeah a new age,
Magi got it right, they’re the 3 wise men
There’s a new age yeah a new age
Aquarius is coming
There’s a new age, yeah a new age
Post-Christendom is here
Goodbye Constantine
The da vinci code is just a book
Frankly baby I don’t give… it a look
We’re outa pisces its “water time”
Keep your eyes on Jesus and you’ll be fine
New age coming our poles will switch
Bless the poor, oh yeah, and bless the rich
We’re closing in on the end of time
Scuse me baby I’ve seen a sign
Nine eleven & tsunami wave,
Reminds us of our early grave
Wave of terror and 3rd world debt
Aquarius coming, we’re gonna get wet
Living in an age gone by
Church must change or Church will die
“Fear works” is it a government plan?
Give your life to the son of man
There a new age, yes, a new age,
Magi-saw-the-star-sign
A new age, yeah a new age,
Magi got it right, they’re the 3 wise men
Theres a new age yeah a new age
Aquarius is coming
There’s a new age, yeah a new age
Post-Christendom is here
Goodbye Constantine
Not 4 da Superficial
Notes
I listen to Radio 4 a lot as there is more “debate” than “angst” (I’ve had my fill of angst).
One day there was a discussion and the clergy man was getting quite frustrated with the people who were trying to OVER simplify the bible passages that they were discussing and he said “look, this book, you have to read it properly…. It’s not for the superficial” which kinda rang a chord with me!
The message of Jesus and salvation has to be simple and it is, but when you get into the “meat” – hey! I agree it aint for the superficial!
Also, I am tired of TV and its’ superficiality.
I am tired of globalisation setting our agendas and I’m tired of being told what to aspire to….how to think…
Reading the book properly sets us free….
Words of song
Ancient, ancient stories, tales of truth from long ago,
Wisdom, in those pages, reap the fruit from seeds you sow
Yet in these modern times we live, sophisticated conversation,
Mouthing off our knowledge like a child does,
Superficial, condescending, yearning for the stardust
Calling, from their pages, giving clues on how to live,
Guiding, guiding onwards, showing how and why to give,
Yet in our modern text and data, superficial complication,
Showing off attention seeking children,
Superficial overstated, truth we seeks not hidden!
Freedom, we loose our shackles, rejecting all those “telling lies”
Freedom, make our choices, peel the skin from unseen eyes.
Computer programmed, age we live in
Superficial big distraction, like a child the centre of attention
Superficial, lack of knowing, JESUS! Never mentioned!
Love Child
Notes:
Jesus was/is the “Love Child” ---- words that God might be singing?
Verse 1
Can you believe in the world that I made?
Can you believe in the story I gave?
Can you be part of my own sacrifice?
Will you attend to the things that aren’t nice?
Chorus
Can you hear my love child?
Can you hear him?
Can you feel him in your heart?
Can you hear my love child?
Can you touch him?
Can you never be apart?
Can you hear him
Verse 2
Can you hold onto the words that I speak?
Will you be bold when they shout “Jesus Freak”?
Will you be scared as they talk in your face? (in yer face Christian)
Can you believe I made ALL human race?
Verse 3
You whisper your prayers in the dead of the night
I hear you call when your life isn’t right
You shout & groan, you think I don’t act
I’m waiting for you, to move 1st, that’s a fact
Verse 4
Cry out to me oh your souls that I made
Worship & Praise me, your songs never fade (no they never fade away)
Give me your life now, I’ll give you one back
Tell of MY Jesus, get on the right track
Nineteen 79
Notes
1979 was the year of my personal conversion.
Prior to that I was deeply superstitious…
Bernadette was my girlfriend… now my wife!
Words of Song
Heard about the book, didn’t listen to the songs, never had the need to pray, Never in the paper, wasn’t on my TV, thought he had nothing to say.
Mister superstitious, got to have a routine, just to get me through to the night, mister superstition – cannot break a habit, helps to make me do things right.
Girlfriend! Tells me some news, doesn’t sound like the blues, opens the book, then my eyes began to open and look!
Holy spirit, welcome in! – rushing in!
Then I play my music – try to make it happen
Try to make it part of the plan
Still I push my music – nothing ever works out – try to take it outta the can
Well I heard a Jesus story, ate an egg at easter, tried to get a grip on my life.
Sang a Christmas carol, heard about the real thing, then I found a beautiful wife
Got a faith in Jesus, met the holy spirit, know about the end of the world
Now I’m pushing 50, yet another album, that is how my life unfurled
Freaked out Stories
Notes
Hmmmmmm! The da vinci code Dan Brown book… new age mysticism, freemasons, knights templars, Egypt, Mayans, Atlantis …. Coupled with 20th century conspiracy theories….. it was time to set the record straight!
Do you remember Bishop of Durham in 80’s announcing his view that the virgin birth was a myth! ??
Words of song
Hey! Grab a cuppa coffee and sit on yer chair,
I’m gonna tell a story some Christians don’t dare,
Try and pay attention, turn off your phone,
Forget about your “day” and how you pay off that loan
Some people think that Jesus was just merely a man,
Enlightened in spirit, taught that “everyone can”
Lived happy ever after, was married with kids,
The resurrection story was a bunch of big fibs
Like the Bishop of Durham, the virgin had lied,
A cover up story protects a young bride
These people believe us believers are fools
That the church we’ve built has ridiculous rules
The bloodline of our hero traced to south france,
But this stories a secret if you tell they’ll pounce
Gnosic believers were hounded and topped
Church got its way and knights templars were cropped
The arc of the covenant has the secret of life
Hey! It’s hard to believe in a Jesus with wife!
The Arc is in Scotland, the secrets now out
Freemasons guard it, they have incredible clout!
All that we do is determined by stones
We call them the planets they effect new born bones
The earth is in pisces yeah the sign of the fish
Aquarius coming, new age, new dish!
America lied when they went to the moon
Conspiracy theory or the words of a loon?
Egypt built pyramids through power of mind
A skill we’ve lost, through the passage of time!
The mayans, atlantis and most of Peru
Secretive stories meant just for the few
Controlling the masses, they did with church
Ironic really as lately it’s lurched!
From numbers a plenty to merely a few
Revivealist stories…. But new age just grew!
Islam, buddists, jews and the seiks,
Aethiest soldiers believe we’re just weak
So what do I think?
Have they blown up my mind?
Dig up Rosslyn chapel and see what they find!
I cannot believe in a love without God
“Satans not evil” – oh really! That’s odd!!!
Chorus
Freaked out freaked out stories
They haven’t got a clue
Freaked out freaked out stories
They don’t know what to do,
Freaked out freaked out stories
They’re searching for what is right
Freaked out freaked out stories
They’re not living in his light! (maybe that’s the problem!)
Superfickle Intermission
Is an instrumental!
It separates the songs recorded all on my lonesome at home, with the last 3 rock songs recorded with a real life band
Answer Cuthberts Prayers
Notes – I decided to “really find out” about early Christianity in England and I went back to the Dark Ages… Bede and all that! This was just on the cusp of “Christendom” – (300 years after Jesus death the Roman Empire became “Christian” and their new empire had to spread out to convert the pagan conquered lands) - it took until about 600 to enforce Christendom in England…
Meantime, in northern windswept Northumbria, a county..country actually! in those days, that ranged from well into modern day Scotland, right down to the midlands and across to modern day Cumbria – then called Rhegged – there lived some Celtic monks – one of them was Cuthbert and I’ve stood on his Island! – actually the island referred to in Lindisfarne was his 1st attempt at seclusion, the real one is far out in the very choppy waters of the Farne islands – today inhabited only by seals…. And perhaps sea otters?
Oswy was the king of Northumbria and he was a “Christian”… well kind of…. Years of being a pagan warlord are hard to shake.
However, the monks were split in their viewpoints on where the Christian church should move…how times don’t change! … on one side were the monks that had been to Constantines Rome – probably Augustus?? by then, and on the other side were what we shall call the Celtic Christians of which Cuthbert was one.
So in 664 there was the First SYNOD. Held in Whitby.
Cuthbert didn’t put up a fight…. And so King Oswy decreed that England would be Christian of the Roman variety…. The state was married to the church in line with the roman way and henceforth we built churches of stone that had to be higher than the other buildings, we introduced infant baptism “roll up roll up, bring your kids and we will guarantee them a place in heaven” “and bring some cash!”
- empire eh!! – it all followed a military structure!
- Meanwhile, Cuthbert refused to shave his head in the new Roman manner (Tonsure) – cuthbert had his bald patch at the forehead as per the true celtic monks, whereas the roman monks had theirs at the back of the head. Cuthbert was seen to be continuing on as if the synod had never happened!
- Cuthbert had 3 big things going on in his life;-
1 He believed in “Relationship Evangalism” and didn’t subscribe to the Roman way as that way was inflicted on the people and he suspected that true faith choice had not been made – his way was to befriend his Pagan contemporaries and evangalise through way of life…. Evangalism the roman way, wasn’t needed, church attendance was virtually compulsory!
2 He recognised the importance of praying for the land…. He recognised the importance of taking oneself away to be with God and to dwell on his word. This was why he moved to a remote island and moved stones that were impossible for several hefty men to move! It is also why it was reported that Cuthbert could be seen standing still facing the mainland arms outstretched for HOURS! Just praying for the land and this is why the stories included the fact that wild sea otters came and swam around him, there are some Christian scientists today that believe he was waist deep in the water but was kept warm by the Sea Otters
3 Yet, he also went on major long walks, taking along younger monks and bringing the good news to the peoples he visited throughout northern England.
Finally, like us all Cuthbert died. But that was not the end of his story.
Despite not adhering to the newly enforced Roman way, his life was revered and respected and so his body was placed in a wooden coffin and laid to rest in Lindisfarne……. Until word arrived that the Vikings were coming! – The monks tried to save Cuthberts coffin, but the wooden coffin split and revealed his body – despite being dead 11 years, his body was still in tact and it looked as if he had just fallen asleep! – the monks believed that this was Gods way of showing what a special man he was.
His body was taken to Durham.
Years later, the Vikings came again and amazingly his body was moved again for safe keeping – the lid was opened (20 odd years after his death) and again he looked as if he had just fallen asleep!!
Cuthbert today rests under Durham Cathedral – well, his body does!
Words of song
Go back to dark age England
Where Cuthbert came to be
Praying for his pagan land
He stood waist deep in the sea
Wild Otters came and played by him,
He stood still for many hours,
Cuthbert kept on praying hard
And the spirit came in power!
Chorus;-
Come! Come! Come! Answer Cuthberts Prayer!
Cuthbert died, was laid to rest
Eleven years went on
Exhumed, his grave was opened up
They thought foul play had come!
His body fresh, just laying there
No rotten corpse was found!
Cuthbert looked as if asleep
In tact, his body sound!
Whitby Synod, easter date
Politicians win the day
21st century England
Church importance has gone away!
Politicians, Kings and driven men
Opinions Law and Power!
Forgotten prayers that Cuthbert said
Sweet England’s now turned SOUR!!!
Sword Of the Spirit
Notes
Most of these words are in the bible …. Armour of God. (Thessalonians 5 v16 – 22 ) (Ephesians 6 v10) (Phillipians 3 v 13) (Colossians 4 v2 v5 v6)
Song written a LONG time ago – way back when Dayspring were in Swarcliffe if you remember that and I played this one with a makeshift band, so I reckon this is nearly 20 years old….
Because of that it reflects this “fight” that I was pre-occupied with at the time.
I still hear many Christians talk that way, so perhaps it is still relevant!..............
Words of Song
With the sword of the spirit and your shoes of peace,
Dresssed in full armour, Enemy to sieze!
Buckle up your belt of truth and grab your shield of faith
Put on your helmet and you shall be safe
There’s no turning back, we’ve got a job to do
Take peace with you brothers and love with you too!
The enemy is scheming, his thoughts are all black
Keep on the lookout and don’t turn your back
Lord! I wish how I wish that we hadn’t this to do
Lord! Help me please help me I haven’t got a clue
Lord! I’m waiting waiting, where am I to fight?
Suffer, Suffer!, I’ve got to grow, I’ve got to show that we’re right!
Forget what is behind you keep good news in your heart
Don’t strain for the future it’ll blow you apart
Press towards that goal & win that prize
Don’t listen to the rumours from the king of the lies
Devote yourselves, be watchful and pray
Be wise to outsiders and show them the way!
Let your conversation always be full of grace
Don’t let go, don’t slacken that pace!
I Want you by my side
Notes
Part of the story of my life since my conversion – perhaps the story of others ?
Words of song
It seems so long ago now
Twenty something years or more o
When I first called out your name
The passion built inside me
My blood boiled and almost fried me!
When I first heard of your fame
People talked of what you’re doing
Some believed you’d be my ruin
When I learned what you had done
Others said they’d seen your mother!
Strangers asked to be my brother!
When I learned why you had come!
Chorus
Lifes tempest tries to drown me
It blows my mind, sets fire to my soul
And makes me wanna hide
Your words are pure as honey
You smile into my ears I taste your perfumed feet
I want you by my side
Some days are fun and some bring sorrow
You say you’ll come, today tomorrow?
I feel you here, then your gone!
I’ve heard people slag and curse you
I can’t believe why people hurt you
I feel you here shining on!
Growing old and getting lazy
Memory of you dull and hazy
I want to hear your sweet voice
Spirit falls and my hearts pounding!
Heard your name! trumpets sounding!
I know I made the right choice!
